Last year, Jackie Pottgen arranged a showing of Pray the Devil Back to Hell at the Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport, on September 14, 2011.

Now, Judy Wilenski has done the same for the Riverhead Library. That date is set for March 6 at 6 p.m., with a snow date of March 8.

Two of the women featured in the documentary won the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize. They are Leymah Gbowee, who mobilized and organized women to bring an end to the long civil war in Liberia; and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, elected president of Liberia in 2005. Sirleaf is Africa's first democratically elected female president.

A third woman, Tawakkol Karman, also shares the 2011 Peace Prize. All three were recognized by the Nobel Committee "for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women's rights to full participation in peace-building work."

Pray the Devil Back to Hell

We had a successful showing of "Pray the Devil Back to Hell" at Brookhaven Lab on August 3.

As we did for the March screening of the film, as part of Women's History Month events at the Riverhead campus of Suffolk County Community College (SCCC), we introduced SCCC's Office of Multicultual Affairs, the lab's Brookhaven Women in Science, and Peconic Bay Zonta, the local chapter of Zonta International. All three organizations worked together to obtain the rights for public showings of the documentary and are cosponsors for every screening.

At Brookhaven Lab, the audience numbered over 50 and included laboratory staff, summer interns, and community members. Afterwards, a small group stayed to discuss the events in Liberia and the current situation there, with presidential elections scheduled for this coming October.

Our next scheduled showing of the documentary is on September 14, at 6 p.m. in the Greenport public library.

Have Yard Sale, Promote Zonta

Peconic Bay's first-ever yard sale on May 28, during the Memorial Day weekend, was a great success!

We hung a giant Zonta International banner over Mary Ann's garage, displayed information about Zonta, and talked to interested individuals about Peconic Bay's service and advocacy work in the local community.

Of course, we sold a lot of stuff. It's amazing what you can pull out of your closets and basement that somebody else is willing to put in hers.

Our incidental bake sale proved to be very popular, too. The mini loaves baked by Mary Ann's sister sold out first, followed by Judy's signature cookies.

Part of the money we raised has been set aside for a fund linked to the three Zonta International scholarships:

Amelia Earhart Fellowship
Women in Business Scholarship
Young Women in Public Affairs Award

The remainder was used to help sponsor Ellen's run, which benefits the Ellen Hermanson Breast Cancer Center at Southampton Hospital. Sponsorship entitles Peconic Bay to have the Zonta logo on signage associated with the event. This year, Ellen's Run is on August 21, and several Peconic Bay members plan to walk the 5k (3.1-mile) route.

Yard Sale!

Peconic Bay Zonta will be holding a yard sale on Saturday, May 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (rain date Sunday, May 29), at 5 Emerson Court, Hampton Bays. Money raised will support a scholarship fund for young women and help sponsor Ellen's Run in Southampton, to benefit local breast-cancer patients. On sale will be everything from clothes and jewelry to furniture and collectibles -- all at good prices.

Service and Advocacy

Looking ahead, Peconic Bay Zonta will be doing a service project with the Parent Leadership Initiative in April 2011.

Looking back, in November 2010, we prepared at harvest meal for the homeless served by Maureen's Haven. In the photo at the top (or left), some of our members are gathered at the home of Jackie Pottgen, who is carving the turkey. Jackie is the newest member of Peconic Bay.

More recently, on March 8, 2011, we gathered for a business meeting at the home of Kay Jones. Appropriately, it was International Women's Day. Our guest for the evening was Judith Wilenski, with whom we walked in October 2010 to raise money for breast cancer research.

International Women Day's is the same day of the year as Zonta Rose Day. A yellow rose has been a favorite Zonta symbol for many years. On this day, Zontians worldwide are encouraged to distribute yellow roses or items bearing the image of yellow roses, accompanied by information about Zonta International and issues relating to improving the lives of women. In the second picture (or right), notice the bouquet of yellow roses.

Seven walkers represented Peconic Bay Zonta among the crowd of 55,000 (Newsday's estimate) "Making Strides Against Cancer" at Jones Beach on October 17, 2010.

Barbara, her husband Richard, Kay, Kay's friend Judy, and Mona did the official five-mile walk. Mona's husband Michael and Mona's mom Rose, age 88, took a more leisurely path.

We never spotted Sharon and husband Ron from the Greater Queens club, who were somewhere in the crush of walkers. We heard from Kathy, Long Island club, who reported that she and Sister Evelyn from Long Island, as well as Phoebe from the Suffolk club, were all stuck in impenetrable traffic.

In the end, our Zonta International team raised $905 through the American Cancer Society website. More dollars were turned in the day of the walk and checks are still coming in. So the final tally will be closer to $1,000.

For next year, we'll explore Kathy's suggestion: Do our own Zonta Area 1 walk to raise money for cancer research and toast our efforts over lunch. Barbara, who takes the lead on this activity, will get it organized.

Report on September Meeting

We had a full house at our September meeting on the 14th.

Our special guest for the evening was Kathy Rau, Area 1 Director, who reported on the Zonta International Convention, held this past June in San Antonio, Texas.

Kathy also showed pictures and passed out material she had collected from the international conference. It sounded like a great event, and we learned a lot about the operations side of this large organization.

We will be preparing a complete turkey meal for Maureen's Haven, which serves homeless individuals on eastern Long Island.

An aside: Peconic Bay is one of seven clubs in Area 1, which is part of District 3. Zonta International divides the world into districts. Our district consists of 33 clubs, organized into four areas. District 3 counts close to 1,000 individual members. It covers all of New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia, part of Pennsylvania, and portions of New York, including New York City and Long Island, the eastern end of which is Peconic Bay territory.

Busy With Service Projects

We've been busy in recent months with two service projects.

On April 13, Peconic Bay repeated a popular service project for the Parent Leadership Initiative. In this program, we teach a class about online resources available free of charge from public libraries, using the computer room at the Riverhead Library to give participants hands-on experience accessing the library's online catalogue and databases. Once again, the class was organized and taught by Peconic Bay's Mary Ann Miller, head librarian at Suffolk Community College in Riverhead, and librarian MaryPat Takacs, a former Zontian who continues to volunteer for this worthwhile endeavor.

Almost a month later, on May 11, Diane Greenberg and Mona Rowe spent an evening sorting food as part of the National Association of Letter Carriers food drive. During this nationwide campaign, Americans donated a record 77.1 million pounds of non-perishable food, which is then sorted and delivered to local food banks, pantries and shelters to help needy families.

Peconic Bay Zonta sent the following report to Zonta International - District 3 on January 7, 2010.

1. Programs of note: List one in the past and one coming up.

Past: Peconic Bay organized the first joint breast-cancer walk involving multiple Area 1 Zonta clubs: Peconic Bay, Suffolk and Long Island. Upcoming: Peconic Bay looks forward to teaching a class at the Riverhead Free Library for the local Parent Leadership Initiative program about online resources available free of charge from public libraries. In 2009, the club doubled the number of participants from the year before.

2. Membership: Note recruitment efforts.

Peconic Bay held a Zonta Informational Network Gathering, or ZING, on August 11, 2009, inviting prospective members via notices in local newspapers. Two women and one gentleman indicated interest. Since then, one woman has attended several Peconic Bay events and expressed interest in joining Zonta.

3. Service: List two key areas.

1) Peconic Bay raised $1,300 for the American Cancer Society through the joint breast cancer walk in October 2009. 2) In November 2009, Peconic Bay prepared a harvest meal for 20 on behalf of Maureen’s Haven, which serves the homeless on eastern Long Island.

4. Advocacy: List your most important achievement.

In May 2009, Peconic Bay sent letters to New York Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and to members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to encourage the ratification of CEDAW, the Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

5. Violence against Women: List one strategy your club has achieved to date.

In July 2009, news reports circulated of women in Sudan being arrested and flogged in public for wearing pants. Peconic Bay used that topic to encourage discussion about violence against women at its ZING in August 2009.

6. UN: What is your club is implementing on behalf of the UN?

Harvest Meal for Maureen’s Haven

Liz Freher hosted Peconic Bay's November 15 service project -- a harvest meal prepared for Maureen's Haven, which serves the homeless on eastern Long Island. Liz, together with Kay Jones, Mary Ann Miller, Kathleen Walker and Michael Rowe, made a turkey dinner, complete with stuffing, side dishes and dessert.

This is our third year doing this service project at Liz's home. As in past years, we delivered the meal to Sacred Hearth Church in Cutchogue.

Maureen's Haven provides safe, temporary housing to the homeless during the cold winter months. The program operates from November 1 through April 1.

For the holiday season, Peconic Bay also contributed $100 to Human Resources of the Hamptons to support their 16th annual Holiday Giving Day on December 20, when this local organization provides food and gifts to families on eastern Long Island.

Zonta Women Make Strides Against Cancer

Brrr . . . It was a blustery day at Jones Beach, with a Nor'easter passing over Long Island. But we Zonta women persevered in the five-mile breast cancer walk, Making Strides Against Cancer, on October 18, 2009.

Barbara Pierce organized Peconic Bay's Zonta team effort, joined by the Suffolk and Long Island Zonta clubs. Here's a list of the intrepid walkers.

A New Year for Zonta

The new Zonta year has begun for Peconic Bay.

We have a roster of eight members -- all returning, and a list of service projects -- some familiar and one new.

During our July meeting in Hampton Bays (thank you to Kay for hosting our meeting and for the lovely photo of Rosa rugosa), we discussed the following:

Schedule occasional meetings on the “west coast” to make it easier for Lori and Diane L. to attend.
Our August meeting will focus on Sudan, where women were recently flogged in public for wearing pants.
In the fall, Mona will join Barbara in a service project to improve literacy among women. (This is the Literacy Suffolk program, under which Barbara is already tutoring three women in English.)
In the spirit of Zonta, Mary Ann recommended that we all read "Three Cups of Tea," an account of one man's quest to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Kay reported that the recent Peconic Community Council conference on women’s issues, “Breaking the Glass Ceiling,” drew about 80 participants. We should pay attention to this organization, as they seem to be active.

Catching Up and Coming Up

At Peconic Bay’s April 21 business meeting, Mary Ann Miller reported on Peconic Bay’s very successful service project for the Parent Leadership Initiative, held on April 14 at the Riverhead Free Library. Using the computer room at the library, Mary Ann and Mary Pat Takacs, a former member of Peconic Bay, guided 10 participants through a session about resources available at the public library, accessing the library's online catalog and databases via computers.

Also, Barbara Pierce added India to our growing stats on birth, infant mortality, fertility and literacy rates for various countries.

Coming up: Service project on May 12, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Melville location -- Volunteers needed to sort food for the annual Letter Carrier Food Drive. This is in lieu of our normal business meeting in May. Send an e-mail to Diane Greenberg (greenb@bnl.gov), who is organizing this for our club. Diane and Barbara are planning to go.

Ireland in March, India in April

For our business meeting on March 10, 2009, Peconic Bay members compared birth rate, infant mortality, fertility rate and literacy stats in Ireland against a sampling of other countries worldwide. We also enjoyed a meal of corned beef and cabbage, Dublin Coddle, Irish soda bread, and Irish coffee.

Thanks to our lively auctioneer, Lori DiDomenico, the evening’s re-gifting event raised over $130 for the club. In exchange, everyone went home with some fun things.

For our April business meeting, our focus will be on India, with a nod to Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire.

Because of Peconic Bay’s service project on April 14, carried out by Mary Ann Miller and Mary Pat Takacs at the Riverhead Free Library, we will meet on April 21 at 6:15 p.m. in Hampton Bays.

With a Maasai shield centered on bold black, red and green stripes, the Kenyan flag served as a backdrop to Peconic Bay’s business meeting on January 13.

Club members enjoyed an evening of discussion and dinner inspired by Kenya.

Our advocacy chair, Barbara Pierce, presented statistics comparing birth, infant mortality, fertility and literacy rates among four countries: Kenya, China, Mexico and the U.S.

Service Project: Harvest Meal

Peconic Bay members Lori DiDomenico, Liz Freher, Kay Jones, Mary Ann Miller, Barbara Pierce, and Mona Rowe gathered at Liz’s home in Cutchogue on November 2, 2008, to prepare a harvest meal for Maureen’s Haven, which serves the homeless on eastern Long Island.

We were joined by Diane Petersen, who had read about Peconic Bay Zonta in a local newspaper and wanted to learn more about the group’s activities on behalf of women and girls.

The afternoon was whirlwind of peeling, cutting, stirring and baking. Wow, can these ladies cook! Here’s the menu:
- turkey with wild rice stuffing
- cranberry chutney
- cornbread
- sweet potatoes
- green beans
- bread, rolls and butter
- pumpkin pie and apple crisp

Before delivering the meal to Sacred Heart Church in Cutchogue, we also took the time to hold a business meeting to talk about other planned service activities for this year:
- a computer-based project with the Riverhead Parent Leadership Initiative, which mostly serves women returning to the workforce
- volunteering for the U.S. Postal Service Food Drive

Inevitably, discussion turned to fund raising, which the group will need to explore if we want to support scholarships for young women.

Our next business meeting is Tuesday, December 9, at 6:15 p.m. in Hampton Bays.

Zonta District 3 Conference
October 3-5, 2008, Hauppauge, New York

I bring you greetings from Peconic Bay -- all eight of us counting Deborah Burden, a member since June.

Last year, Peconic Bay repeated service projects we had enjoyed in our first year. Just before Thanksgiving, for example, we prepared a harvest meal for the homeless on eastern Long Island, through a program organized by Maureen’s Haven. Kay Jones made from scratch eight pumpkin pies for dessert. Eight! Since we also made a huge tray of apple crisp, we diverted one of the pies for product testing, finishing it off before delivering the turkey and all the trimmings.

While that was fun, the highlight of our past year was a new service project with the Parent Leadership Initiative of Suffolk County. Here’s how the program works. Every week, from March through May, parents come with their children to a Head Start facility in Riverhead. After everyone has dinner, the parents – mostly women – leave their children with caretakers and attend classes on various topics, such as public speaking, interview techniques, and writing a resume. After much discussion with the program’s organizer, we developed a presentation on using the public library, with a focus on computers and online resources.

It took a bit of negotiating to pull off. We had to arrange to use the computer room at the Riverhead public library, since we wanted each parent to work on her own computer. Also, our program had to be strong enough to justify moving the parents to a different location, minus their children.

In the end, our presentation went smoothly and feedback was enthusiastic. We see great value in helping young women build computer skills that are increasingly important in today’s job market.

Hearts and Flowers

Hearts and flowers were the centerpiece for Peconic Bay's February 13 meeting, where we heard a report from Vice President Diane Greenberg on the Amelia Earhart luncheon that she attended on the club's behalf. The event was hosted by Zonta Club of Greater Queens on January 26, 2008, appropriately at the 56th Fighter Group Restaurant at Republic Airport. At the luncheon, Greater Queens awarded its annual Amelia Earhart scholarship to Jessica Sharle, a recent graduate of the U. of North Carolina and fledgling aviator.

Three delightful guests attended our informal Zonta Informational Network Gathering (ZING) on December 4, 2007.

We did a round of introductions, the members of Peconic Bay talking about why we joined Zonta, the club’s history, upcoming activities, and long-term plans. Our guests, who are experienced in college counseling, community relations and energy technology, shared their thoughts about women’s issues. We spent the evening in lively discussion, nibbling on a selection of Greek, Italian, Japanese and Spanish hors d’oeuvres, all to reflect the international nature of Zonta.

In keeping with Peconic Bay’s tradition, we had done some online research and gathered the following factoids on our countries for the evening:

GREECE
In Greece, women take home about three-quarters what men earn at the same job. Reports published by the Statistical Office of the EU (Eurostar) show that the greatest pay inequalities are found in the higher income groups, the older age groups and among the highest educated.

ITALY
A Google search on “women Italy” yields as the first (most viewed) entry: “Sexy Italian Women.”

JAPAN
Arranged marriage is still a form of spouse selection in Japan, about 15% of all marriage in 1987-1992 were arranged. The higher the age of a husband or wife at first marriage, the more likely it is that the marriage is arranged. Love marriage is more frequently occurred in urban area than rural area.

SPAIN
Cristina Sánchez, who in 1996 became the first female Spanish bullfighter in modern history, said that she was still fighting the same battles as women in the boardroom. Sánchez, who retired in 1999 after suffering discrimination from her male colleagues, returned to the bullring last month. “Let's not deceive ourselves, things haven't changed that much,” she said, referring to the macho attitudes in bullfighting.

Harvest Meal

Peconic Bay Zonta prepared a classic harvest meal tonight for Maureen's Haven, a homeless outreach center serving the East End. The feast for 20 included:
- turkey and gravy
- wild rice stuffing
- candied yams
- buttered vegetables
- rolls and butter
- pumpkin pie
- apple crisp

Peconic Bay Report at District Conference

Greetings from Peconic Bay.

Out on eastern Long Island, the apples are ready for picking, pumpkins are full on the vine and the beaches are empty again.

In the coming year, Peconic Bay is looking forward to:
- a service project for a homeless shelter
- joining other Long Island clubs for the Amelia Earhart gala
- a project with the Riverhead Parent Leadership Initiative, which mostly serves women returning to the workforce
- and volunteering for the U.S. Postal Service Food Drive

With the help of Karen Siegel, our Area 1 Director, and Kelly Daniele, president of the Suffolk Club, our neighbors to the west, we are also planning two ZINGs to increase our membership by 20 percent. We may only grow from seven to nine, but that’s double the Zonta average.

Peconic Bay meets on the second Tuesday of every month. We have established a tradition of researching and discussing women’s issues in a particular country each meeting, an activity that enlightens our advocacy efforts. In October, we’ll be talking about the status of women in Turkey, a Muslim country. It promises to be a lively discussion.

DISTRICT 3 CONFERENCE
Club reports -- For their two-minute reports at District 3 Conference on September 29, all clubs are asked to focus on achievements in service, advocacy, and fund raising, and list future goals. For Peconic Bay, will report on first year’s progress in identifying two service projects, one for a homeless shelter and one for the US Postal Service. Will also describe our now-established tradition of researching and discussing women’s issues at each monthly meeting, an activity that enlightens our advocacy efforts. The club’s goal for the upcoming year: Increase membership by 20 percent.
Basket – Agreed to contribute a Peconic Bay basket for conference raffle. Will bring fresh-picked apples from the North Fork.

SHOW AND TELL
Peconic Bay website -- Thanks to host Kelly Daniele’s WiFi connection, was able to go online and show the newly launched Peconic Bay website. Other clubs are interested in doing the same. Will send the URL, along with initial instructions.

SERVICE PROJECT
Once a Month Campaign -- Wrote check for $50 to Zonta Club of Greater Queens for “Once a Month” Campaign. They will purchase sanitary pads on behalf of Area 1 clubs, apply “Zonta International” labels to all the packages, and give them to the Zonta Club of Northern Valley at the upcoming District 3 Conference. Northern Valley is arranging delivery to Zambia. Greater Queens suggested that we do a four-month campaign for this service project.

UNITED NATIONS
October is UN month – Encouraged to mark in some way October as United Nations Month. Mary Ann is Peconic Bay’s UN Liaison. Any ideas, Mary Ann?

Push for ZINGs -- Karen Siegel, Area 1 President, with the help of Kelly Daniele, Suffolk Club President, wants to organize two ZINGs (Zonta Informational Network Gatherings) on behalf of Peconic Bay, one in November and one in March. Suggestion: Use our November monthly meeting at the home of Kay Jones for the first ZING and do the March ZING at the Atlantis Aquarium in Riverhead.
