Affiliated with Zonta International, Peconic Bay Zonta shares similar goals with The Butterfly Effect Project, as the mission of the local Zonta club, which currently has nine members, is to empower women and girls through service and advocacy.
Fulford started The Butterfly Effect Project in 2014 with eight girls that came from Riverhead and Flanders. The program has since grown to encompass over 600 girls, many from Riverhead and the surrounding area, and others from the South Shore and central Suffolk County.
At the dinner to honor her, Peconic Bay Zonta members presented Fulford with several gifts, including a necklace, a plaque that says, “Without change there would be no butterflies,” a formal proclamation to honor her as leader of The Butterfly Effect Project and a dozen yellow roses. The yellow rose signifies friendship, and it is an official Zonta symbol.
