Peconic Bay Zonta Stands with Ukraine

Today marks one month since Russian troops invaded Ukraine. In solidarity with the embattled country, Peconic Bay Zonta has donated $150 to UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund.

In appealing for help, UNICEF released this statement: "The war in Ukraine poses an immediate and growing threat to the lives and well-being of the country's 7.5 million children. Humanitarian needs are multiplying by the hour as fighting intensifies. Children continue to be killed, wounded and deeply traumatized by the devastating violence all around them."

In the photo above, Peconic Bay member and violinist Mona Rowe plays the Ukraine National Anthem with cellists of the O`ahu Civic Orchestra in Hawai`i. Rowe then recorded the cello ensemble in four-part harmony, and their performance was integrated with others in Hawai`i, joining a worldwide effort by musicians to honor and support the Ukrainian people.

UNICEF was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1965.
