First, Mallory spoke about climate change, a concern noted as early as 1912 in the magazine Popular Mechanics. She addressed political obstacles and environmental injustices causing harm to marginalized and poor communities, along with women unduly affected worldwide. She stressed the power and work of the individual as an engine to impact the larger, dominant issue of global warming.
On a more personal level, Mallory described her involvement with a young woman from Ghana who needed surgery to correct a facial disfigurement. She became a strong advocate for this young woman, helping to facilitate her surgery. Sharing photos of the excellent result, Joan reminded us that Zontians can be powerful advocates for women and girls who need assistance.
Lisa Burton (below, seated between Peconic Bay Zonta members Geri Kazenoff, left, and Liala Strotman, right) spoke about the upcoming Zonta District 3 Governor’s Conference, October 6-8, 2023, in Baltimore, MD. She encouraged us to attend in person or electronically. Burton is hoping for a large turnout to spread the message of Zonta: empowering women through service and advocacy.
