Claudia Goldin Wins Nobel Prize in Economics for Advancing Understanding of Gender Wage Gap

Claudia Goldin has won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences "for having advanced our understanding of women's labour market outcomes." The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the award on October 9, 2023.

A Harvard professor, Goldin provided the first comprehensive history of American women’s earnings and job market outcomes through the centuries, tracking the evolution of the nation’s gender wage gap.

Said Goldin in an interview for the Harvard Gazette, “We’ve come to a point in which women’s employment is extremely high, and yet there are inequalities. And those inequalities are inequalities that occur within households.”

This piece by economist and NY Times Opinion columnist Paul Krugman, "An Economics Nobel for Showing How Much Women Matter," comments on the significance of Goldin's work.
