Though this was HoMMUNC's 35th year, we had to shift our conference to an online format for the first time due to the coronavirus pandemic. Even with this major change, HoMMUNC remained the largest single-day Model UN conference on the East Coast, attracting over 1,000 high school and middle school students from across the United States and Canada.
Throughout the day, delegates debated topics ranging from mitigating the financial consequences of Covid-19 and illicit trafficking of marine wildlife to historical issues such as the death of Joseph Stalin and the Shining Path. By late afternoon, all twelve committees had created and passed comprehensive resolutions addressing these pressing global concerns.
For our opening ceremonies, we had the honor of hearing about Zonta International and the organization's affiliation with the United Nations from Pamela Morgan, one of Zonta's UN representatives. Ms. Morgan spoke about the drastic human rights violations that women face around the globe and emphasized the need for change from our generation. Her message was particularly impactful to our audience of young students who are interested in the UN and passionate about creating a better world.
Ms. Morgan's presentation left us all informed about Zonta's mission and inspired to get involved. To that end, HoMMUNC chose Zonta International as our partner this year so that delegates could easily choose to donate. We are so appreciative of Ms. Morgan's time and generosity, and we hope to collaborate with Zonta again in the future.
NOTE: Becca Rosenzweig is the granddaughter of Peconic Bay member Geri Kazenoff. She joined her grandmother on a Peconic Bay Zonta virtual meeting in September 2020 and was impressed with the goals of Peconic Bay and Zonta International. That introduction to Zonta led her to request a speaker from Zonta for the October 2020 Model UN Conference.
