Diane Loffredo of Ridge received a bouquet of yellow roses from her fellow Peconic Bay Zonta members on March 8, which is Zonta Rose Day. The date coincides with International Women’s Day.
Peconic Bay Zonta is affiliated with Zonta International, a nonprofit organization that works to empower women and girls through service and advocacy.
The bright yellow Zonta rose was introduced at a Zonta International convention in Sydney, Australia, in 1983. Today, the lovely flower can be seen in members’ gardens, memorial plantings, hospitals, homes for the aged, and in the forecourt of Australia’s Parliament.
It is customary on March 8 for Zonta members to give yellow roses to women who they admire for their dedication to improving the status of women. Loffredo is currently recovering from surgery, but she expects to continue to be an active member of Peconic Bay Zonta.
March is observed as Women’s History Month in the U.S., and as Peconic Bay Zonta celebrates the important role of women in American history, locally the club is grateful for its active members, who raise funds to provide scholarships for a music student at East End Arts, and for women who are taking English as a Second Language courses at Suffolk County Community College in Riverhead. Zontians also work on topics such as child marriage, human trafficking, and domestic violence.
