April 28 was Denin Day. Peconic Bay members Diane Greenberg in New York (top) and Mona Rowe in Hawaii (above) wore blue jeans in solidarity with women who are survivors of sexual violence.

Here's the history: In 1998, the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction of a 45-year-old married man. The court suggested that the rape must have been consensual because the 18-year-old victim was wearing jeans that would have been impossible to remove unless she helped the man.

Wow!

Enraged by the verdict, women in the Italian Parliament protested by wearing jeans to work. This motivated women around the world to do the same, and wearing jeans became an international symbol of protest against old attitudes toward sexual assault.

Denim Day is observed every year on the last Wednesday of April.
