Club member Liala Strotman hosted Peconic Bay’s fund raiser at her home in Wading River, contributing her late mother’s jewelry to the sale and spreading her irresistible enthusiasm to all who stopped by. We also had donations of ready-to-sell goods and fresh-baked breads by other club members and friends. Special this year – and much appreciated – was the generous donation of goods from the local Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (AKA) Sigma Psi Omega Chapter. It was the best yard sale that Peconic Bay has sponsored.
Pictured above dropping off items are AKA members (from left) Jazmine Brown, Joan Patricia Knight-Mingo and Jataya Wright.
In addition, AKA presented Peconic Bay Zonta with a check for $200, which, along with the profits from the yard sale, will be used for scholarships and other service projects. Strotman gratefully accepted the check presented to her by AKA members.
AKA is the first intercollegiate historically African American sorority in the U.S. Besides espousing high scholastic and ethical standards and providing "Service to all Mankind," the sorority members have a goal similar to Zonta's: they work to improve the social stature of women and girls. Under its Global Impact Target, AKA engages in community service projects that have an international impact. Sigma Psi Omega has partnered with Zonta International as it continues to make a difference worldwide.
Affiliated with Zonta International, Peconic Bay Zonta seeks to empower women and girls through service and advocacy.
