The Artist Is a Woman

"We learned the artist is a woman, in time to check our enthusiasm. Had it been otherwise, we might have hailed these sculptural expressions as by surely a great figure among moderns."

So wrote an art critic after seeing the work of female sculptor Louise Nevelson in mid-century New York.

This piece, Black Zag X, 1969, is in the collection of the Honolulu Museum of Art. Nevelson (1899–1988) is one of the most important figures in American sculpture.
