It’s Halloween! Say “Boo” to Chocolate Companies Blind to Child Labor

Last year, Americans spent $2 billion on chocolate candy for Halloween.

Hundreds of thousands of children in Mali, Burkino Faso and Togo are either bought from poor families or simply stolen and then shipped to Cote d’Ivoire, a West African country where nearly half of the world’s cocoa supply is grown. These children are enslaved. See http://johnrobbins.info/blog/is-theslavery-in-your-chocolate.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Buy fair-trade chocolate to help stop the epidemic of human trafficking in Africa.

Companies that use cocoa not produced by slave labor include:
  • Cadbury UK
  • Clif Bar
  • Dagoba Organic Chocolate
  • Kailua Candy Company
  • Newman’s Own Organics, Taza Chocolate
  • Theo Chocolate

Don’t see some of the big-name chocolate producers? That’s because some of them have made promises to adopt fair-trade certification but have yet to implement the necessary changes.
