For the second time, Peconic Bay Zonta sponsored LUNAFEST, a film festival that features short films by, for, and about women. About 40 people attended the fundraiser, which netted approximately $500. The profit will help to fund scholarships for local female students and allow our club to continue to provide goods and services to a local nonprofit organization – The Butterfly Effect Project – that fosters self-confidence and academic success in girls in Riverhead, NY, and surrounding areas.
Held at the Congregational Church of Patchogue, the fundraiser included donated raffle baskets of wine and gourmet goods, a watercolor painting, and a 50/50 raffle. Complimentary coffee and tea were served along with home-baked cookies.

Eight films were featured, all celebrating and championing women’s causes. Topics ranged from racism, sexism and homosexuality to coping with a disability, grief and loneliness.
Five girls from The Butterfly Effect Project attended LUNAFEST, along with the founder and executive director of the program, Tijuana Fulford (third from right), who said that it was “an empowering experience.” Also pictured in the photo (from left) are chaperone Vivian Hobson, along with Butterfly girls Brielle Williams (back), with her arms around Candace Williams, Genesis Fulford, Ashlyn Fulford and Lexi Fulford.
