Hampton Bays Resident Wins ESL Scholarship

Leidy Stefanny Vaca Andrade of Hampton Bays won a $300 scholarship from Peconic Bay Zonta, a nonprofit group that works to improve the status of women and girls. The local Zonta group awards the scholarship biannually to a female student who successfully completed level 3 of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at the Riverhead campus of Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) and is studying to achieve an educational goal.

Stefanny came to the U.S. from Columbia two years ago. She wishes to improve her English-speaking skills to perform her work duties with ease and excellence.

She managed to successfully handle her job as a loan processor at a local bank and her role as a single mother of a 3-year-old boy while taking the ESL course this spring. Since then, she has reunited with her husband. She plans to continue her ESL studies at SCCC.
