This photograph by Barbara Kruger – Untitled (We Are Not Your Servants) – is on display at the Honolulu Museum of Art (HoMA). It features a woman's face as if reclining or sleeping. The text is translated for a Japanese audience.
The graphic black-and-white image dramatically confronts the imbalance of power that exists between men and women in the workplace and in the home, two decades prior to the world-wide #MeToo movement. The photo is dated 1990, and Kruger (b. 1945) lives and works in Los Angeles and New York.
See below HoMA staffer Vivian Lokan's comment on the art.
